Cutting Mats

Two self-healing mats. One of them is right for your bench.

Both close up around the blade and protect the surface underneath. The difference is the material, the size you can have, and how you buy it. PVC is cut to length from stock and bought online; polyurethane is made to your exact sheet size and quoted. This guide takes about a minute.

  • Self-healing in both materials
  • Cut to your size

  • Family-run since 1996

The two mats

Which one are you buying?

Start here if you already know the material. If not, the comparison below settles it in four questions.

Crystal-Seal self-healing PVC, 5 mm and double-sided. Four colours, five stock widths, cut to any length up to 20 metres and priced per linear metre. Buy it online.

How to choose

Four questions, then you know.

Both mats self-heal and both protect the bench. These are the things that actually decide it.

  1. 1

What are you cutting on to?

A standard bench takes a stock width of PVC. An awkward or oversized table wants a sheet made to fit.

  2. 2

    Does silicone matter?

If cut parts go on to bonding, coating, painting or composite lay-up, choose the silicone-free polyurethane.

  3. 3

    How big is the surface?

PVC comes in five widths and any length to 20 m. Polyurethane is made to size up to 3680 × 1660 mm.

  4. 4

How do you want to buy?

PVC is priced per metre and bought online today. Polyurethane is quoted on size, thickness and colour.

PVC or polyurethane?

The same job, two materials. Every figure here is what each product publishes; where a property is not published for one of them, the row says so rather than guessing.

Both are self-healing: ordinary shallow blade paths close up rather than becoming permanent grooves. Neither is cut-proof, and a blade pressed hard enough will still mark either surface.

Worked example: a 1500 × 2500 mm cutting table

A standard bench, everyday knife work, nothing bonded afterwards. That is 2.5 metres of 1500 mm wide Crystal-Seal PVC — in the basket today, cut as one continuous length. If the same table fed a composites bay, the silicone-free polyurethane sheet would be the one to quote.

Why buy your cutting mat from Crystal Rubber

Cut properly, specified honestly, delivered fast.

A made-to-size blue polyurethane cutting mat lifted at the corner from a stainless steel bench

Cut to your size, not a box size

PVC is cut from the roll to the length you ask for, and polyurethane is made to your sheet dimensions. One mat that fits the bench beats several that nearly do.

Close-up of a self-healing cutting mat surface after cutting

A surface that closes up

Both materials self-heal: ordinary shallow blade paths close rather than becoming grooves that catch the next cut and pull the blade off line.

Composite material being cut on a polyurethane bench mat

Specified by people who know materials

We will tell you when the cheaper PVC is the right answer. Thirty years of rubber and plastics means we would rather get the specification right than sell the dearer sheet.

Questions

Frequently asked.

What does self-healing actually mean?

The surface closes around ordinary shallow blade paths instead of holding them open as permanent grooves. It keeps the mat smooth and stops the blade following an old cut. Neither material is cut-proof: press hard enough, or cut the same line repeatedly, and any mat will mark.

PVC or polyurethane — which should I buy?

PVC for a standard bench you want covered today: stock widths, cut to length, priced per metre and bought online. Polyurethane where the table is oversized or an awkward shape, where you need a thickness above 5 mm, or where silicone must be kept away from the work.

Why is the polyurethane mat quoted rather than priced?

It is made to your sheet size rather than cut from a stock width, so the price depends on the dimensions, thickness, colour and quantity. Send us the size and we will come back within 3 hours during opening hours.

What sizes can I get?

PVC comes in 1000, 1200, 1500, 1800 and 2200 mm widths, cut to any length up to 20 metres; 1000, 1800 and 2200 mm are stocked in Clear. Polyurethane is made to your size up to 3680 × 1660 mm.

How thick are they?

The PVC mat is 5 mm and double-sided, so it can be turned over for twice the life. Polyurethane is 5 mm as standard, with 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10 mm on request.

What colours are there?

PVC in Clear, Jet Black, Grey and Royal Blue. Polyurethane in red, green, blue, black, yellow and grey. Choose whichever gives the best contrast with the material you cut.

Is either one silicone-free?

The polyurethane mat is specified silicone-free, which matters if cut parts go on to bonding, coating, painting or composite lay-up. The PVC mat is silicone and phthalate plasticiser free.

Can I use them for food preparation?

Neither mat is offered as a food-contact product. If you need a food-safe surface, tell us and we will point you at the right material rather than sell you a cutting mat.

How is the PVC mat priced?

Per linear metre, ex VAT, from £42 per metre depending on colour and width. You choose the length, and it is cut as one continuous piece.

Can I get a sample?

Ask us. Tell us the material and colour you are considering and we will let you know what we can send.

How do I look after it?

Wipe with a damp cloth and mild detergent. Avoid abrasive pads and strong solvents, keep it flat, and rotate a double-sided PVC mat when one face has taken a lot of work.

How quickly will it arrive?

PVC mats are usually dispatched same day if ordered before 12:00pm and in stock, with delivery calculated at checkout. Made-to-size polyurethane is confirmed when we quote.
